Early Compact Florescent and LED lights have been a failure in terms of creating a livable ambiance. In the past not enough attention has been paid to the colour temperature or colour number.
The colour of mid day daylight in Australia is about 5500k, later evening light drops to around 4000k. As the colour number drops, so the human body is geared to relax mode.
It is unwise, in lighting design terms, to fight this instinct. So we use a higher colour number in work,retail or activity areas and a lower seemingly warmer colour in a relaxing area.
As you can see from our colour test rig, from left to right is the 50 watt halogen, 2800k 9 watt Coolmax Domestic White 3000k 9 watt Coolmax Commercial White 4000k 9 watt Coolmax Display White 6500k
These all give about the same quantity of light, with the Coolmax globes using 80% less power and generating almost 90% of the halogen output.
